Iceberg and Hip Hop

So promised adventure stories from yesterday… We walked out to the iceberg and attended Youth Hip-Hop.

First, the iceberg! It's huge. Looking out the window at Dave and Pat's I forget the scope of the iceberg. It's only about a ten minute walk out but it grows and grows the closer you get. Dave accompanied us for the journey out as sometimes there can be open water with the iceberg constantly shifting. We chipped out some ice to take back to the house.

Does this shot look familiar? Only 30 000 Km away

Proof that we made it out.
(It's tricky photographing with all the ice and snow. Nance would not approve)

Cool fact: When you put iceberg ice under tap water there is a cool cracking/popping noise because of the oxygen trapped inside and the pressure that the water is under. It almost sounds like the sizzling of evergreens on the campfire. I think Rebekah got a video of this, but again Brooke's a "take it all in and think about it later" type of explorer.

After exploring the iceberg we headed back for another delicious supper and then Rebekah and I went up to the high school for Youth Hip Hop. About 20 students from the school showed up in the gym - mostly grade 7 & 8s - to learn and show off some hip hop moves. There used to be a program run in the school gym but left with the programmers so the current gym teacher is trying to get the program back up on it's feet after the students were asking for it. It is a great place for the students to hang out and express themselves. The session ended with a girls vs. boys battle with the boys winning on their jumps and tricks, but fund as had by all.

Today I helped out Tove in the art room. The students are working on portrait sketching, and monochromatic scales with watercolours. They take a while to settle in but some of them are really great artists and take pride in their work. It's neat to see the students in reading & writing classes, versus classes like art and gym. Their presence really shifts depending on where they feel their strengths lie.

I am really enjoying working in the junior high portion of the high school! The budding relationships excite me for the following weeks.
